SOGHIN

Society for Gastroenterology
and Hepatology in Nigeria

The Society for Gastroenterology & Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN) was founded on 21st September 2007 at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, by the merger between the West African Society of Gastroenterology (WASOG), Nigeria Chapter and the Association for the Study of the Liver in Nigeria (ASLIN). Medical and allied health professionals with interest in the fields of Gastroenterology and Hepatology constituted the membership. The first SOGHIN President was Professor Bababode J. Bojuwoye, a renowned and well-respected Professor of Gastroenterology based at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria.

In 2009, SOGHIN officially became an affiliate of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO), the global custodian of research, education and practice of Gastroenterology. In 2011, SOGHIN was successfully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Abuja, Nigeria, thereby attaining the status of a corporate and legal entity.

At inception, the society had a membership of less than 50 but by 2017, a decade after its founding, membership climbed over the 100 mark. Membership now consists of Physicians, Surgeons, Gastrointestinal Pathologists, Interventional Radiologists and Endoscopy Nurses. In an effort to promote gastrointestinal endoscopy nursing training and practice, SOGENON (Society for Gastroenterology Nurses of Nigeria) was formed in 2012 as a sub-group and affiliate of SOGHIN.
